*Class Descriptions:

Puppy Socialization and Enrichment for puppies 8 weeks – 20 weeks old

Provide puppies with a foundation of experience and skills that will help them grow into well-adjusted adult dogs. This includes providing puppies with exposure to a variety of experiences.  Activities such as exposing puppies to different surfaces, smells, sounds, tastes and sights; providing them with opportunities to play and explore; and teaching them basic commands such as "sit" and "stay."

Emotional stability – the ability to recover easily from fear as well as stress (startle recovery & barrier challenges)
Enrichment – the view that novelty and challenges are opportunities for enrichment rather than things to be feared or avoided (novelty items, Adventure Box, off-premises socialization)
Health – physical wellness and motor skills that will allow the puppy to develop in a neurologically and physically sound way (daily weight checks, grooming, vaccinations, proper nutrition, vet health checks)
Skills – learn behaviors that allow them to function in the  human society (recall, handing, simple commands, crate training, leash walking)
Love – the desire to seek out the company of both dogs and humans as emotionally positive experiences (Conditioned Emotional Responses)

AKC STAR Puppy program for puppies 16 weeks to 1 year of age

The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program is designed to help new puppy owners get started with basic training and socialization. Here are some key points about the program:

Purpose: It aims to provide a solid foundation for puppies and their owners through training and socialization.

Requirements: Puppies must attend an in-person class and demonstrate basic skills, such as walking on a leash.

Benefits: Participants receive a certificate and a medal upon completion, promoting responsible dog ownership.

Pledge: The program encourages owners to commit to responsible pet ownership from the moment they bring a puppy home

STAR PUPPY - PRE-CANINE GOOD CITIZEN® TEST BEHAVIORS:

Allows (in any position) petting by a person other than the owner

Grooming-Allows owner handling and brief exam (ears, feet)

Walks on a Leash-Follows owner on lead in a straight line (15 steps)

Walks by other people-Walks on leash past other people 5-ft away

Sits on command-Owner may use a food lure

Down on command-Owner may use a food lure

Comes to owner from 5-ft when name is called

Reaction to Distractions-distractions are presented 15-ft away

Stay on leash with another person (owner walks 10 steps and returns)

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy prepares pups to move on to Canine Good Citizen training. For example, in STAR, puppies must walk on a leash in a straight line. In CGC, the task becomes more advanced with dogs walking in a pattern that includes right and left turns and stops.

The skills in AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy classes are practical and functional. Teaching puppies to tolerate grooming, handling, and basic exams of the ears, feet, and mouth will result in well-mannered puppies that veterinarians are happy to see.

Power Puppy Class

Power Puppy class is for puppies whose owners seek to participate in various dog sport venues in the future, including conformation, obedience, rally and agility. The class focuses on games and exercises to give the puppies a head start on needed skills, such as rear end awarness, cone work, wobble discs, plank work, recalls, sends and handler engagement exercises. This class is offered in two 4 week sessions.
